RoamCouch (Ryo Ogawa) is a stencil artist, an urban and contemporary art master, and an Ukiyo-e painter (a traditional genre of Japanese woodblock prints & paintings). He is originated from Gifu, Japan.
Deeply influenced by Japanese manga, he commenced his career as a graphic designer at the age of 18. This experience established his distinct style characterized by a whimsical, photorealistic portrayal of cityscapes, where a kaleidoscope of dreamlike, fantastic alternatives of reality are produced.
RoamCouch embarked on his professional career as a full-time artist in 2011 after recovering from a life-changing illness, and created his unique style“Neo Ukiyo-e”. He innovates artmaking by modernizing Ukiyo-e methods and combining stencil art with Japanese handmade paper “Mino washi”. He brings new meaning to the use of stencil and produces meticulous and richly nuanced artworks. Some describe his work ethic as that of a modern master--each piece, containing nearly 50 layers of stencil created by hand, requires an extremely labor-intensive process—sometimes taking up to a year--and ultimately produces an exquisite effect combining vibrancy, nuance, and profundity.
RoamCouch launched his groundbreaking first solo show titled “A Beautiful Life” in New York City in 2014. Since then, His art has been exhibited worldwide, making appearance in Japan, Norway, the United States, and many other countries.
